20 years kalmuck

“kalmuck WACHAU” – Grüner Veltliner in Wachau Style
The connection to his homeland and the conviction of a Wachau winemaker gave rise to the “kalmuck.”

20 years ago, Franz Josef Gritsch had the idea – the “Kalmuck,” the traditional black, brown, and white checked work jacket of Wachau winemakers, became the namesake of the youthful, fruity, fresh Grüner Veltliner. The wine’s patron was the actor Karl Merkatz. Success was not long in coming; the coveted Grüner Veltliner Kalmuck was later joined by its little brother, the GV Kalmücke, and its sister, the Kalmuck Pink Rosé. Grapes from the best Wachau vineyards provide the basis for these popular wines.

Parallel to these successful wines, the Kalmuck jacket also re-established itself as prestige clothing in the Wachau region, whether as traditional costume for bands or for visiting Heurigen wine taverns. In 2015, the Kalmuck Keller was built using state-of-the-art technology. Its facade was clad in the famous Wachau traditional costume.

2025 – We are proud to celebrate 20 years of Kalmuck and sincerely thank all our Kalmuck wine lovers for their loyalty!
