The wine maker - Franz-Josef Gritsch
The work in our vineyard rotates between two worlds. On one side, the Mauritiushof on the church square in Spitz with a history of eight hundred years. On the other side, up the street, the Kalmuck cellar with the most modern technology. Wine maker Franz Joseph Gritsch represents the 7 generations of his family’s winemaking in Spitz. It is obvious that tradition, old values, and passed on knowledge play a large role. It is also obvious that tradition alone cannot create the high quality of today’s wines. That is why there is always a change at the Gritsch winery.
The Wachau with the mighty quiet Danube and the steep terraced vineyards are hard work and much can only be done by hand – from pruning to harvesting. But: the hard work pays off. For example, when on a fall day one is up in the vineyard and the evening sun lights up the Danube and reflects it in the leaves of the vines. The largest reward is when wine lovers have a superb tasting experience with a glass of Gritsch wine. Then all of our hard work is worth it. Yes: we work hard, we strive for perfection and we never forget quality.
